Itinerary

Day 1: Flight From Cusco To Puerto Maldonado

On arrival to Puerto Maldonado airport you will meet with your tour guide and take transportation to the WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will receive a welcome tropical fruit beverage. After a short briefing about the tour, you will embark for a 4 hour motorboat trip up the Tambopata River to WASAI Tambopata Lodge & Research Center (box lunch will be provided on route). During the trip you will be able to observe the local farms and the jungle wildlife. If you are lucky you may be able to see a capybaras, the largest rodent in the world, river turtle, caymans and different species of birds.

After a short rest you will have a brief introductory walk into the forest nearby to learn basic principles of ecology. You will also be able to experience the wildlife, natural history and observe the nocturnal life of insects, frogs of various colors, and an occasional encounter with nocturnal mammals. Your accommodation for the evening will be at WASAI Tambopata Lodge, once you have enjoyed a delicious dinner we advise you to settle down for the evening. You will be able to enjoy the diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany your first night in Amazonia.

Day 2:  Bahuaja-Sonene National Park & Adventure

Your day will begin at dawn where you will begin with a 40 minute journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. On arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay. Following this great experience we will walk through the river beach searching for animal footprints while enjoying a light refreshment.

Mid-morning we return to the lodge to have breakfast. You will then have the choice to either relax in the beauty of the surroundings or get involved inadventure activities. You will also have the chance to swim in the Tambopata River. Those who wish, can kayakon the river or join us to fish in the river which inhabit more than 250 species of fish. On route if the level of river are adequate, we will visit the Cat cascades.

After lunch, we will have an ethno botanical walk into the rainforest by the Tambopata cross path, to learn about plants and medicinal trees of the area. We will also observe the amazing jungle ecosystem where we will see walking palm trees, giant lupuna trees, snake trees and so much more. At nightfall, we will once again embark on a nocturnal caiman search. You will then settle down for your second night at WASAI Tambopata Lodge.

Day 3: Day Sandoval Lake – Ecolodge

Following breakfast we will take a boat trip to the WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge, in Puerto Maldonado where we will relax in our bungalows and enjoy a tasty lunch. After lunch we will travel for 30 minutes on the Madre de Dios River, to the access trail to Sandoval Lake, a beautiful rainforest oxbow lake. We will then hike 3 km to the banks of the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre historic looking birds), monkeys, etc. If we are lucky we could see the family of giant otters which live at the lake. You will have the opportunity to swim in the lake.

We will then begin our return hike to the Madre de Dios River to return to Puerto Maldonado. There we will stay in the modern and comfortable bungalows of WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge. Following dinner you will have the chance to relax or explore the city by foot or by bicycle. You can also enjoy the swimming pool and its cascade surrounded by tropical vegetation. You will have the rest of the evening to enjoy the nightlife of this welcoming city. Then settle down for the evening for your final night at WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge.

Day 4: Flight From Puerto Maldonado To Lima

Following an early breakfast you will take the transportation provided to the airport. Although this is the end of your tour, we are certain you will never forget your amazon experience in Peru.
