Salkantay has been labelled the most spectacular peak in the Peruvian Andes. On this trip, you’ll trek in the shadows of this impressive mountain, interact with its inhabitants and explore its forgotten ruins. You’ll arrive at Santa Teresa – the backdoor of Machu Picchu – where you’ll catch the train to Aguas Calientes for an early-morning visit to Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1:(Hiking Distance 10 Km)

Your day will begin at 6am where you tour guide will collect you from your hotel. You will then drive approximately one hour to the village of Mollepata located 2900 metres above sea level. Here you will have the opportunity to collect any last minute supplies, simply stretch your legs or use the restrooms at a local restaurant. The journey will then continue until we reach Sayapata, the starting point of your adventure.

The first part of the trail will provide you with panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay now mountain, part of the Andes of Peru and the astonishing Apurimac River.

After a delicious lunch, you will hike for approximately 3 hours towards the famous Huamantay Lake, the water colour of this lake offer you memories to last a lifetime.

Following your visit to Huamantay Lake you will make your way to camp and enjoy a delicious dinner before you settle down for the evening.

Day 2:

Breakfast will be served at 7am so be prepared for another early start. Your second day will be filled with contrasting scenery and you will have the opportunity to experience the extreme weather changes. You will hike in amounts snow peaks, dry areas and tropical areas.

You will begin a 3 hour ascending hike towards a place called Umantay located next to the Apu Salkantay, this will be the highest point of your adventure (4600 meters), from here, the nature and the imposing Slakantay Mountain (6264 meters) offers traveller with unforgettable breath-taking views.

After an additional 2 hour hike through the Andes, you arrive to Huayracpunku for a well-deserved lunch. Following lunch your hike will gently descend for 2 more hours to the campsite in RaynaNiyoc for your second night. Once settled you will have chance to recover your energy for the next day of your adventure.

Day 3: (Hiking Distance 15 Km)

Today the hike will last for approximately 3 hours at gently pace. You will hike towards the site of Uscamayuc which boasts waterfalls, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds that can be observed throughout the day.

If you are lucky enough, you might be able to see the Peruvian National Bird "Cock of the Rocks". After lunch, a local bus will take us to Santa Teresa Hot Springs, where you will enjoy a relaxing rejuvenating treat at the hot pools.

You will spend your evening camping at the shore of the river beach at Santa Teresa.

Day 4: (Hiking Distance 12 Km )

You will drive for 40 minutes on a local transportation to the village of Lucmabamba. Once at the Llactapata entrance, you will start hiking the ascent trail towards the inca ruins of Llactapata. This trail offers great views of coffee plantations, beautiful landscapes as well as diverse flora and fauna. Upon arrival to the Llactapata ruins, you will encounter your first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Here you will have time to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Your final descending trail will take you to the town of Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, you will be accommodated at the hostel or hotel of your choice (included on this package). You will enjoy dinner with your group at a local restaurant at approximately 7:00p.m.

Day 5: (No Hiking, Explore The Wonders Of Mahcupicchu)

Today, you will have a guided visit of Machupicchu. This will last approximately 2 hours and include extensive knowledge of the site and the important sites within. After the guided tour you can continuing exploring the lost city at your leisure. You may also like to explore and walk up to the Sun Gate or hike the tallest pick of the site “Huaynapicchu Mountain” (depending on availability).

After Lunch (not included in the package), you will travel by train back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 20:00 hours.

Tips

Tips: 

You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping sheet with you, but please note that you can hire a sleeping bag in Cusco for approximately US$20 for the duration of the trek.

  • Watch/alarm clock and torch/flashlight (and spare batteries)
  • Electrical adapter plug (there isn’t plugs on this trek until the last day)
  • Toiletries/roll of toilet paper/travel wipes/ tissues

  • Sunscreen, lip balm, sunhat and sunglasses
  • Earplugs and eye mask (for light sleepers)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Warm clothes - when travelling in cooler climates

  • Comfortable and sturdy walking shoes with good walking socks
  • Camera and spare film (or recharge for digital cameras)

  • Strong, waterproof boots or hiking shoes, properly worn in for trekking
  • Warm socks
  • Comfortable, lightweight shoes to wear around camp in the evenings
  • Wind and waterproof rain jacket
  • A couple of mid-layer shirts/pullovers
  • 2 pairs of thermal long-sleeved singlets and long johns (quick drying)
  • Warm trekking pants
  • A pair of water-proof/windproof over-pants
  • Warm gloves and warm hat or beanie
  • Wash kit and small towel
  • Swimwear for the hot springs at Aguas Calientes (time permitting)
